Course length: 1-2 hours
Are you a first responder? Do you know how to respond if you encounter a downed power line, or other electrical hazard, in the course of your work? BC Hydro has developed a training program to help first responders be aware of and avoid the electrical hazards they may encounter in emergency situations.
The program is one to two hours long (depending on audience) and includes a video, overheads and presentation delivered by knowledgeable instructors from the Electrical Industry Training Institute (EITI).
Target Audience
Police and paramedics who respond to emergencies involving high-voltage power lines, either overhead or underground. Knowledge of Electrical Safety is not a pre-requisite.
Topics Include:
- Overview of the electrical utility system
- Voltage and its effects on the human body
- Assessing electrical risks in emergency situations
- Step and touch potential: keeping safe distances
- Moving people out of energized areas
- Downed power lines and re-energization risks
- Underground hazards
